How to approach and excel at PBQs (Performance-Based Questions) on CompTIA certification exams.
Performance-Based Questions (PBQs) are interactive simulations that test your hands-on skills. Instead of selecting from multiple-choice answers, you'll perform actual tasks like configuring a firewall, troubleshooting a network, or analyzing logs.
Important: PBQs are worth MORE points than multiple-choice questions and typically appear at the beginning of the exam.
Most important tip: PBQs appear first but take the most time. Flag them ALL and complete the multiple-choice questions first, then return to PBQs.
PBQ instructions tell you EXACTLY what's required. Read them twice before starting. Missing a requirement = losing points.
Many PBQs provide reference materials or tools. Click everything to see what's available - diagrams, command outputs, dropdown menus.
If you don't know the exact answer, use logic. For example, firewall rules: deny should come before allow, most specific rules first.
Partial credit exists! Even if you're unsure, make your best attempt. An educated guess is better than nothing.
Sometimes extra information is included to distract you. Focus only on what the instructions ask for.
Before submitting a PBQ, verify you've completed ALL requirements in the instructions. Missed steps = lost points.
For a 90-minute, 90-question exam:
Practice platforms like PassIt.Now offer PBQ simulations that mimic the real exam interface. Practice these extensively.
For Network+: Use Packet Tracer or GNS3
For A+: Build/repair actual PCs, practice in Windows/Linux VMs
For Security+: Configure firewalls, analyze real logs, use Wireshark
YouTube has many examples of people completing sample PBQs. Watching these helps you understand the interface and common question patterns.
This is the #1 mistake. You'll waste precious time on hard questions while easy points sit unanswered.
Reading quickly and missing a requirement guarantees lost points. Take 30 seconds to read carefully.
CompTIA PBQs test practical skills, not advanced configurations. If it seems too simple, it probably is that simple.
