First-Time Certification Test Taker Guide

Everything you need to know about taking your first CompTIA certification exam, from scheduling to test day.

Before You Schedule Your Exam

Make Sure You're Ready

Don't schedule your exam until you're consistently scoring 85% or higher on practice tests. Certification exams cost $250-$370, so you want to pass on your first attempt.

Pro Tip: Take full-length practice exams under timed conditions. If you're running out of time or scoring below 85%, you need more study time.

Create a CompTIA Account

Visit the CompTIA Store to create an account. You'll use this to purchase exam vouchers and manage your certifications.

Purchase Your Exam Voucher

Exam vouchers can be purchased directly from CompTIA or through authorized partners (sometimes at a discount). Look for academic discounts if you're a student.

  • A+ Core 1 or Core 2: ~$250 each
  • Network+: ~$358
  • Security+: ~$404

Pick Your Date & Time

Schedule for a time when you're most alert. Morning exams work well for most people, but choose what fits your peak performance time.

Important: Schedule 2-4 weeks out to give yourself a deadline while leaving time for final review. Last-minute scheduling can create unnecessary pressure.

The Week Before Your Exam

Final Review Strategy

  • Review weak areas: Focus on topics where you struggled in practice tests
  • No new material: Don't try to learn completely new topics in the final week
  • Practice PBQs: Spend extra time on performance-based question simulations
  • Review key acronyms: Make flashcards for common abbreviations and protocols

Manage Test Anxiety

Some nervousness is normal and can even help you stay focused. Here's how to keep anxiety manageable:

  • Visualize success - imagine yourself calmly working through questions
  • Practice breathing exercises or meditation
  • Get adequate sleep (7-8 hours) every night
  • Exercise regularly to reduce stress

The Day Before Your Exam

  • Light review only: Don't cram. Review your notes for 1-2 hours max, then STOP studying.
  • Prepare your materials: Lay out valid government ID, confirmation email, and any required documents.
  • Get good sleep: Aim for 8 hours. Set multiple alarms if needed.
  • Relax and recharge: Watch a movie, go for a walk, or do something enjoyable. Your brain needs rest.

Exam Day: What to Expect

Morning Routine

  • Eat a healthy breakfast (avoid heavy meals that make you sluggish)
  • Arrive 30 minutes early (or start online check-in 30 min before)
  • Use the bathroom before entering the testing room
  • Bring valid government-issued ID (must match your CompTIA account name EXACTLY)

Check-In Process

You'll be asked to:

  • Show valid ID
  • Sign in electronically or on paper
  • Store all personal items in a locker (phone, wallet, notes, etc.)
  • Empty your pockets
  • Potentially undergo a palm vein scan or photo ID verification

Note: You'll usually be provided with a dry-erase board and marker (NOT scratch paper and pencil). Ask the proctor if you're unsure.

During the Exam

Tutorial (5-10 minutes): You'll see a brief tutorial on how to navigate the exam. Use this time to calm your nerves and get comfortable with the interface.

PBQs First: Performance-Based Questions will appear at the beginning. Flag them and skip to multiple-choice questions. Return to PBQs after completing the easier questions.

Time Management: Keep an eye on the timer. Aim for 1 minute per multiple-choice question.

Breaks: NO scheduled breaks. If you need to use the restroom, raise your hand. The clock keeps running, so avoid long breaks.

After the Exam

Results are instant! You'll see your pass/fail status immediately after clicking "End Exam." Your score report will show:

  • Your scaled score (e.g., 725 out of 900)
  • Performance by domain (where you excelled or struggled)
  • Pass/fail status

If you pass: Congratulations! Your official certificate will be emailed within 5 business days.

If you don't pass: Don't be discouraged. Review your score report to see weak areas, study those topics, and reschedule. Most people pass on their second attempt.

Common First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Scheduling Too Soon

Impatience leads to failure. Only schedule when you're truly ready (85%+ on practice tests).

❌ All-Night Cramming

Staying up late studying the night before hurts more than it helps. Sleep is crucial for memory recall.

❌ Ignoring PBQs

PBQs are worth more points. Don't skip them entirely - budget enough time to attempt them all.

❌ Not Reviewing Flagged Questions

Always review flagged questions if time permits. First instincts aren't always right.
